2. Critical Electrician Directives & Wiring Codes
Licensed Electrician & Safety Directive
Licensed Electrician Requirement: All wiring must be installed by a licensed electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC NFPA 70) and local building codes.
A. Supply Wire Type & Temperature Rating
- Conductor Type: Strictly copper conductors only. Aluminum wiring is not permitted.
- Temperature Rating: Wiring routed into the heater junction cavity must be rated for minimum 90°C (194°F) insulation (e.g. THHN / THWN in conduit or high-temp flexible metallic conduit).
- Flexible Conduit Whip: Terminate conduit into the knockout on the bottom of the heater using an approved liquid-tight or metallic conduit connector. Allow sufficient whip slack so the heater can be removed from its mounting brackets for element service.
B. GFCI Protection Guidance
- Manufacturer Directive: Harvia electric sauna heaters are designed to be connected to standard dedicated thermal-magnetic breakers without GFCI protection unless explicitly mandated by local electrical inspection authority.
- Nuisance Tripping Note: As with all mineral-insulated heating elements, the magnesium oxide element insulation absorbs atmospheric humidity during transit and storage. Initial energization produces harmless micro-amperage ground leakage that will trip 4–6 mA Class A GFCI breakers. Running the heater on a standard breaker boils out moisture within 1 hour.
C. Grounding & Neutral Connection
- Single Phase 240V Connection:
- Connect Hot Line 1 to L1.
- Connect Hot Line 2 to L2.
- Connect Equipment Ground to the green Ground Terminal / Chassis Lug.
- Neutral: The heating elements do NOT utilize a neutral wire on 240V. (For Digital KIP-W paired with Xenio CX170, the Xenio power unit also runs on 240V 2-wire + ground).
3. Clearances & Spatial Layout (Safety Distances)
Table 2: Minimum Safety Clearances to Combustibles
| Parameter | KIP-30 / KIP-45 | KIP-60 | KIP-80 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum Distance to Side Wall | 2.0 in (50 mm) | 3.0 in (75 mm) | 4.0 in (100 mm) |
| Minimum Distance to Finished Floor | 7.0 in (178 mm) | 7.0 in (178 mm) | 7.0 in (178 mm) |
| Minimum Clearance to Ceiling | 44.0 in (1,118 mm) above top rim | 44.0 in (1,118 mm) above top rim | 44.0 in (1,118 mm) above top rim |
| Minimum Distance to Guard Rail | 3.0 in (75 mm) | 4.0 in (100 mm) | 5.0 in (125 mm) |
| Minimum Ceiling Height | 75.0 in (1,900 mm) | 75.0 in (1,900 mm) | 75.0 in (1,900 mm) |
4. Wall Mounting & Sauna Kit Timber Construction
The dry weight of the Harvia KIP is approximately 30–31.5 lbs (14 kg), and ~72 lbs (33 kg) when loaded with 40 lbs of stones.
A. Pre-Fabricated Solid Timber Sauna Kits (Dundalk Leisurecraft & SaunaLife)
Pre-Manufactured Solid Timber Kit Structural Directives
Kit Owners & Installers Reassurance: If installing Harvia KIP into an EpicSauna pre-manufactured sauna kit:
- Direct Lag Mounting: Dundalk Leisurecraft Canadian Timber barrels/cabins use solid 1.5-inch thick cedar staves; SaunaLife models use 1.65"+ solid spruce timbers.
- No Stud Modification: The mounting bracket screws drive directly into the solid timber wall anywhere on the wall. Solid 1.5" cedar provides massive screw withdrawal strength that easily supports the 72 lb loaded heater without opening walls or adding blocking.
- Maintain the 7.0-inch minimum clearance between the bottom of the heater and the finished cedar floor.
B. Custom Stud-Framed Saunas (with Cedar Cladding)
- If building an indoor custom sauna with standard 2x4 stud framing behind cedar tongue-and-groove cladding, install horizontal 2x4 solid wood backing between wall studs at the heater bracket height before nailing tongue-and-groove boards.
5. Control Wiring Differences: Dials (KIP-B) vs Digital (KIP-W)
Variant 1: Mechanical Dials (KIP-B)
- Features built-in controls on the bottom front:
- Thermostat Dial: Regulates bath temperature.
- 60-Minute Timer Dial: Features a 1-hour active operational zone and a 1-to-8 hour delay start zone.
- High-Limit Reset Button: Located on the bottom electrical tray cover. If the sauna overheats, the mechanical high-limit trips and must be manually pressed to reset.
- Wiring Path: 240V power cable runs directly from the main panel through the conduit knockout into the bottom heater terminal block.
