\Note on HL80E: NEC 125% continuous duty rule requires 50A breaker in strict inspection jurisdictions. \\Note on Combi Interlock: The Xenio Combi control interlocks the heating elements and steamer tank so they do not energize full heating load simultaneously, maintaining 50A maximum service.*

2. Critical Electrician Directives & Code Mandates

Code Mandate

Licensed Electrician Requirement

All rough-in, conduit pathways, panel breaker installations, and Xenio power unit connections must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor conforming to NEC (NFPA 70) or CEC standards.

A. Supply Conductor Standards & Conduit Entry

  • Conductor Material: Copper conductors only, rated minimum 90°C (194°F) (THHN/THWN).
  • Conduit Rough-In: Terminate wiring using flexible metallic or liquid-tight conduit through the bottom knockout on the side of the heater base.
  • Neutral Conductor: No neutral wire is connected to the standard Virta heater. For the Virta Combi, the steamer boiler and automated water refill solenoid connect to the Xenio Combi contactor unit per the manufacturer schematic.

B. GFCI Breaker Policy

  • Manufacturer Recommendation: Connect to a dedicated standard 2-pole thermal-magnetic breaker without GFCI. Standard Class A GFCI breakers (4–6 mA) are prone to nuisance tripping during startup due to minor atmospheric moisture absorption in the heating elements, which evaporates within 1 hour of heating.

3. Clearances & Spatial Layout (Safety Distances)

4. Floor Mounting & Sauna Kit Timber Construction

The loaded operating weight of the Virta with 120–160 lbs of stones is ~170 to 230 lbs (77–104 kg).

A. Pre-Fabricated Solid Timber Sauna Kits (Dundalk Leisurecraft & SaunaLife)

Pro Rough-In Advisory

Kit Owners & Installers Reassurance

If installing Harvia Virta into an EpicSauna pre-manufactured solid timber kit:

  • Floor-Standing Chassis: The entire weight of the Virta rests securely on the solid 1.5"+ cedar or spruce floorboards via four heavy-duty adjustable leveling legs.
  • No Wall Structural Modification: Because the unit is floor-mounted, no custom wall framing or stud blocking is required.
  • Front Service Hatch: The Virta features a front-access maintenance hatch allowing electricians to access wiring terminals and heating elements without removing the stones.

B. Bench Embedding Cutouts

  • If recessing the Virta into lower benches, maintain the 4.0-inch (or 6.0-inch) perimeter clearance and install the official Harvia Virta Embedding Flange (Black).

5. Control System Architecture (Xenio CX170 vs Xenio Combi CX170C)

  • Virta Standard (HL60E/HL80E/HL90E/HL110E): Operated via the Harvia Xenio CX170 power unit, ceiling temperature sensor, and digital touch panel.
  • Virta Combi (HL80SA/HL90SA/HL110SA): Operated via the Harvia Xenio Combi CX170C power unit, which features dual sensor inputs:
  • Ceiling temperature sensor with thermal safety fuse.
  • Relative humidity sensor to monitor and automate steam output.

Virta Combi 50A Interlock Directives

The Xenio Combi CX170C control coordinates the steamer element and heater elements so that they never draw maximum capacity simultaneously. When the steamer tank boils, the control modulates the heating elements to strictly respect the maximum continuous 50A rating of the circuit. No secondary high-voltage service drop is required.

6. Sizing Formula & Sauna Kit Verification

  • Formula: Room Volume (cu. ft.) + (3.3 cu. ft. × Sq. Ft. Uninsulated Glass/Tile).
  • Kit Compatibility:
  • Virta 6kW (177–294 cu. ft.): 4-person indoor saunas or 6'×6' outdoor barrels.
  • Virta 8kW / 9kW (177–494 cu. ft.): Sized for 6-person barrels (Tranquility, Serenity) and cabin saunas (Georgian Cabin).
  • Virta 10.5kW (354–636 cu. ft.): Large outdoor cabin saunas and high-volume commercial installations.

Frequently Asked Questions (Electrician & Rough-In Knowledge Base)

Does the Harvia Virta have a front maintenance hatch?

Yes. One of the unique engineering advantages of the Harvia Virta is its front-opening electrical service compartment, which allows an electrician to test terminals and replace heating elements without having to unpack 120 lbs of stones.
