2. Critical Electrician Directives & Code Mandates
Licensed Electrician & Safety Directive
Licensed Electrician Requirement: All electrical rough-in, conduit routing, panel connections, and terminal block terminations must be carried out exclusively by a certified/licensed electrician in accordance with local and national electrical codes (NEC NFPA 70 / CEC).
A. GFCI Protection Guidance
- Manufacturer Recommendation: The official manual states: "It is recommended to connect the unit to the mains without a GFCI breaker."
- Technical Reason / Insulation Resistance: During storage and shipment, the mineral insulation (magnesium oxide) inside electric heating elements naturally absorbs ambient atmospheric humidity. When energized for the first time, this moisture causes temporary low insulation resistance and elevated leakage currents that cause standard 4–6 mA Class A GFCI breakers to trip repeatedly.
- Burn-Off Period: The absorbed moisture completely evaporates within 1 to 2 hours of continuous heating, restoring insulation resistance to nominal levels. If local electrical jurisdiction requires GFCI protection, consult with the local electrical inspector regarding equipment-protection thresholds or dry-out procedures.
B. Wire Specifications & Insulation Types
- Cable Standard: The supply power cable must comply with UL 62 in the United States and CSA 49 in Canada, rated resistant to sunlight, moisture, and oil.
- Prohibited Cables: Do NOT use non-heat-resistant cable with standard PVC insulation. Conductors inside or penetrating the sauna envelope must be rated for high temperatures (minimum 90°C / 105°C copper conductors).
- Conductor Material: Only use copper conductors sized to meet or exceed the minimum AWG ratings in Tables 1A and 1B.
C. Mandatory Terminal Crimping
- Mandatory Metal Sleeve Crimping: The user manual explicitly dictates:
"ATTENTION! Crimping the power cable ends is mandatory. The compression of the metal sleeve ensures that the wire threads are held in place, minimizing the risk of loose connections that can cause electrical faults or pose safety hazards."
- Strip conductors cleanly and compress high-temperature copper ferrules/sleeves onto stranded conductor ends prior to inserting into the
UandVterminal block clamps.
D. In-Sauna Junction Box Regulations
- If a junction box is used inside the sauna room:
- It must be waterproof (sealed against moisture and splash).
- Maximum permissible height: 19 ¹¹/₁₆ in (500 mm / 50 cm) above the finished sauna floor. It must never be mounted in higher, hot-air zones.
3. Clearances & Spatial Layout (Safety Distances)
Strict compliance with minimum safety distances prevents fire hazards and ensures unimpeded convection air flow across the heating elements.

4. Wall Mounting & Structural Rough-In Requirements
The fully loaded DROP heater (unit + 121.3 lbs of stones) weighs 143.3 lbs (65 kg).
A. Pre-Fabricated Solid Timber Sauna Kits (Dundalk Leisurecraft, SaunaLife, etc.)
Pre-Manufactured Solid Timber Kit Structural Directives
Kit Owners & Installers Reassurance: If you are pairing the HUUM DROP with one of our pre-manufactured sauna kits (such as Dundalk Leisurecraft Canadian Timber / Cedar Barrels and Cabins or SaunaLife ERGO and Garden Series), no internal wall framing modification or additional stud blocking is required.
- Solid Structural Timber: These kits are built using solid, massive 1.5-inch to 1.77-inch (38 mm to 45 mm) thick structural wood staves/timbers. Unlike hollow stud walls, solid cedar and spruce timbers provide continuous, high-strength fastener engagement across the entire wall surface.
- Direct Lag Mounting: The heavy-duty wood mounting screws included with the heater bracket bite directly into the solid timber staves, easily exceeding the shear and withdrawal loads required for the 143.3 lb operating weight.
- Panel-Built Models: Modular panel kits (such as indoor SaunaLife models) come with factory-engineered internal solid wood backing plates pre-installed in the designated heater panel.
B. Custom Stud-Framed Saunas (Indoor Custom Rooms with Cedar Cladding)
- If building a custom indoor sauna from scratch with 2x4 stud framing, vapor barrier, and cedar tongue-and-groove cladding:
- Do not rely solely on thin cosmetic paneling or hollow-wall anchors.
- Install horizontal solid 2x4 or 2x6 wood backing between the wall studs at the heater mounting plate level before the interior cedar tongue-and-groove is installed.
C. Mounting Plate Fastening & Locking Bolt
- Fasten the mounting plate to the solid timber wall (or custom blocking) using the supplied 6x40 heavy-duty screws.
- Align the supply cable opening with the rear bracket cut-out.
- Hang the heater frame onto the mounting bracket hooks.
- Safety Bolt: Secure the heater to the mounting frame using the designated safety bolt located in the top-right corner.
Bench Submersion / Embedding Cutouts
- If partially recessing the DROP heater through an upper or lower sauna bench:
- Protrusion Requirement: At least 14 ³/₄ in (375 mm) of the upper section of the heater must protrude above the bench top surface.
-
Embedding Flange: The opening must be trimmed with the official HUUM DROP Embedding Flange (Accessory Code
H3001022).
5. Control System & Power Supply Wiring Architecture
The HUUM DROP is an externally controlled electric sauna heater. It does not have built-in mechanical timer dials or thermostats on its chassis.

SP0121). - Terminations:
- Terminate L1 to terminal U and L2 to terminal V.
- Secure equipment grounding conductor to the chassis ground terminal.
- Fasten the supply cable inside the bushing using the integrated cable strap and secure the retaining clip to the electrical box cover screw.
6. Sizing Formula & Sauna Kit Verification
A. General Sizing Formula (From User Manual)
When sizing a heater for consumer inquiry or site audit:
- Base Calculation: Measure Length × Width × Height in feet = Gross Volume (cu. ft.).
- Non-Insulated Surface Penalty (Mandatory Rule):
For every 1 square foot (1 ft²) of uninsulated glass door, window, brick, stone, or ceramic tile in the sauna room, add 3.3 cubic feet (3.3 ft³) to the calculated volume. (Metric: Add 1 m³ for each 1 m² of uninsulated heat-absorbing wall).
B. Real-World Alignment with EpicSauna Kits & Outdoor Climates
A common question from consumers and electricians is whether the formula matches the heater options offered on our sauna kits (e.g., Dundalk Leisurecraft, SaunaLife). Yes, they align directly:
- Outdoor Barrel Saunas (e.g., Canadian Timber Tranquility / Serenity 6'–7' Barrels):
- Physical Volume: \pi \times r^2 \times L \approx 3.14 \times 3^2 \times 6\text{ ft} \approx 170\text{ to }210\text{ cu. ft.}
- Full Glass Door / Front Glass Penalty: A standard sauna glass door (approx. 14–18 sq. ft.) adds 16 \times 3.3 = +52.8\text{ cu. ft.}
- Effective Thermal Volume: ~220 to 265 cu. ft.
- Matched Heater: HUUM DROP 6kW (177–318 cu. ft.) or HUUM DROP 9kW (283–460 cu. ft.).
- Outdoor Climate Note: For saunas installed outdoors in northern or sub-freezing winter climates, pairing with the 9kW model provides rapid 45-minute heat-up cycles even when the ambient outdoor air is below 32°F (0°C).
- Outdoor Cabin Saunas (e.g., CT Georgian Cabin, Granby Cabin):
- Physical Volume: Approx. 7' W × 7' D × 7' H = ~343 cu. ft.
- Glass Windows & Door Penalty: Approx. 20–25 sq. ft. of glass adds 22 \times 3.3 = +72.6\text{ cu. ft.}
- Effective Thermal Volume: ~415 cu. ft.
- Matched Heater: HUUM DROP 9kW (rated 283–460 cu. ft.). The 9kW is the exact correct model for these large outdoor cabins.
- Compact Indoor Modular Saunas (e.g., SaunaLife Model CL3 / E6):
- Effective Volume: ~120 to 190 cu. ft.
- Matched Heater: HUUM DROP 4.5kW (106–248 cu. ft.) or DROP 6kW (177–318 cu. ft.).
Warranty Note: HUUM warranty terms state that the manufacturer's warranty is void if the heater output (kW) does not correspond to the room's calculated effective volume. Our pre-configured kit pairings adhere strictly to these volume envelopes.

Frequently Asked Questions (Electrician & Rough-In Knowledge Base)
Does the HUUM DROP require a neutral wire?
No. The heating elements operate strictly on 240V (or 208V) single-phase 2-wire power plus an equipment grounding conductor (U, V, Ground). A neutral wire is not connected to the heater chassis. However, check your external control module (such as HUUM UKU) specification, as some smart controllers require a neutral for 120V auxiliary Wi-Fi/relay board operation.
What size breaker do I need for the HUUM DROP 6kW?
The HUUM DROP 6kW draws 25.0 Amps at 240V. According to the manufacturer manual and NEC standard 125% continuous load rules (25 \times 1.25 = 31.25\text{ A}), it requires a 30 Amp 2-pole breaker and minimum 10 AWG copper wire.
What size breaker do I need for the HUUM DROP 9kW?
The HUUM DROP 9kW draws 37.5 Amps at 240V. It requires a 50 Amp 2-pole breaker and minimum 8 AWG copper wire (rated 90°C).
Why does my electrician's GFCI breaker keep tripping on the first fire?
The heating elements use mineral oxide insulation which naturally absorbs moisture from the air during shipping and warehouse storage. This causes nominal ground leakage current when first powered on. The manufacturer specifically recommends connecting the heater without a GFCI breaker. Operating the heater for 1 to 2 hours fully evaporates this moisture and restores standard insulation resistance.
How much clearance does the HUUM DROP need from the ceiling?
All HUUM DROP models require a minimum gap of 47 ¹/₄ in (1,200 mm) between the upper stone surface of the heater and the finished sauna ceiling.
