2. Critical Electrician Directives & Code Mandates
Licensed Electrician & Safety Directive
Dual Branch Circuit Feeding: Because the HIVE Commercial draws up to 75 Amps at 240V, the load is divided into two separate circuits (Circuit 1 and Circuit 2). Both feeds must be properly coordinated and interlocked at the contactor box.
A. GFCI Protection Directives
- Manufacturer Recommendation: The manual states: "It is recommended to connect the unit to the mains without a GFCI breaker."
- Insulation Moisture Evaporation: 528 lbs of cold stones and high-capacity elements will cause normal, safe moisture-related micro-leakage during initial heat-up. Standard Class A GFCI breakers (4–6 mA) will nuisance trip. Moisture fully evaporates within 1–2 hours.
B. Conductor Sizing & Conduit Entry
- Conductors must comply with UL 62 (US) and CSA 49 (Canada), rated minimum 90°C copper.
- PVC non-heat-resistant insulation is prohibited.
- Both cable feeds enter through the designated bottom knockout plates beneath the heater chassis.
C. Mandatory Ferrule Terminal Crimping
- Mandatory Metal Sleeve Compression:
"ATTENTION! Crimping the power cable ends is mandatory. The compression of the metal sleeve ensures that the wire threads are held in place, minimizing the risk of loose connections that can cause electrical faults or pose safety hazards."
- Every conductor strand must be compressed with high-temperature ferrules before insertion into terminal blocks.
D. In-Sauna Junction Box Limits
- Any junction box within the sauna room must be waterproof and positioned at a maximum height of 19 ¹¹/₁₆ in (500 mm / 50 cm) from the floor.
3. Clearances & Spatial Layout (Safety Distances)
Table 2: Minimum Clearance Distances to Combustible Surfaces
| Heater Model | Clearance to Combustible Wall (A) | Clearance to Guard Rail / Front (B) | Minimum Ceiling Clearance (MIN Gap) |
|---|---|---|---|
| HIVE 12 | 4 ²³/₃₂ in (120 mm) | 31 ¹/₂ in (800 mm) | 47 ¹/₄ in (1,200 mm) above stone surface |
| HIVE 15 | 5 ²⁹/₃₂ in (150 mm) | 33 ²⁷/₃₂ in (860 mm) | 47 ¹/₄ in (1,200 mm) above stone surface |
| HIVE 18 | 7 ³/₃₂ in (180 mm) | 36 ¹/₄ in (920 mm) | 47 ¹/₄ in (1,200 mm) above stone surface |

4. Floor Mounting & Sauna Kit Timber Construction
The dry weight of the HIVE Commercial chassis is 48.5–53 lbs (22–24 kg). When loaded with 528 lbs of stones, total operational weight reaches ~580 lbs (263 kg).
A. Pre-Fabricated Solid Timber Sauna Kits & Custom Facilities
Pre-Manufactured Solid Timber Kit Structural Directives
Floor Load Verification: The HIVE Commercial stands on 4 heavy-duty, threaded adjustable leveling legs:
- Point Loading: In solid timber cabins (such as SaunaLife commercial models or large custom timber buildings), verify that the floor timbers or concrete pad can sustain a concentrated static load of 580 lbs.
- Threaded Foot Leveling: All four legs must be adjusted to ensure full contact and equal load bearing on the floor surface prior to loading stones.
- Bench Submersion: If partially recessed into lower benches, maintain at least 13 ²⁵/₃₂ in (350 mm) of clearance above the bench rim and install the commercial embedding flange.
5. Control System Architecture & Dual Contactor Box Setup
Operating a HIVE Commercial heater requires the HUUM UKU Control System paired with the UKU Extension Box (sub-relay module) to switch both electrical feeds simultaneously.

6. Sizing Formula & Commercial Sauna Applications
- Formula: \text{Room Volume (cu. ft.)} + (3.3 \text{ cu. ft.} \times \text{Sq. Ft. Uninsulated Glass/Tile}).
- Commercial Applications:
- HIVE 12 (424–636 cu. ft.): Large private cabins, gym/spa saunas up to 10–12 person capacity.
- HIVE 15 (530–813 cu. ft.): High-traffic public saunas, large wellness center thermal suites.
- HIVE 18 (636–989 cu. ft.): Massive commercial community saunas (up to 1,000 cu. ft.) requiring heavy steam production and rapid thermal replenishment during frequent door openings.
Frequently Asked Questions (Electrician & Rough-In Knowledge Base)
Why does the HUUM HIVE 15kW/18kW require two circuit breakers?
At 240V single-phase, a 15kW heater draws 62.5 Amps and an 18kW draws 75.0 Amps. To remain compliant with standard North American residential/commercial breaker ratings and wire-pulling limits, the manufacturer splits the load into two distinct branch circuits (50A + 50A using 6 AWG + 6 AWG copper wire).
How many pounds of sauna stones does the HIVE Commercial require?
The HIVE 12, 15, and 18 require 528 lbs (240 kg) of rounded natural sauna stones, supplied as 16 boxes of 33 lb stones (2"–4" diameter).
Does the HIVE Commercial heater require a neutral wire?
No. All element circuits operate on 240V (or 208V) 2-wire power plus ground. No neutral is brought to the heater chassis.
