2. Critical Electrician Directives & Code Mandates
Licensed Electrician & Safety Directive
Licensed Electrician Requirement: All electrical rough-in, conduit routing, panel connections, and terminal block terminations must be carried out exclusively by a certified/licensed electrician in accordance with NEC (NFPA 70) and CEC standards.
A. GFCI Protection Directives
- Manufacturer Recommendation: The official manual states: "It is recommended to connect the unit to the mains without a GFCI breaker."
- Temporary Moisture Absorption: The mineral magnesium oxide inside the heating elements naturally absorbs ambient moisture during warehouse storage and transport. Upon initial firing, minute earth leakage currents can cause standard 4–6 mA Class A GFCI breakers to trip. This moisture completely evaporates after 1 to 2 hours of continuous heating, restoring normal high insulation resistance.
B. Wire Specifications & Cable Entrance
- Cable Standard: The supply power cable must comply with UL 62 in the US and CSA 49 in Canada (oil, water, and sunlight resistant).
- PVC Prohibition: Non-heat-resistant cable with PVC insulation is prohibited inside or entering the sauna envelope. Minimum 90°C / 105°C copper conductors are required.
- Cable Entrance: Conductor entrance knockouts are located on the bottom cover plate of the HIVE heater base.
C. Mandatory Terminal Crimping
- Mandatory Ferrule Sleeves:
"ATTENTION! Crimping the power cable ends is mandatory. The compression of the metal sleeve ensures that the wire threads are held in place, minimizing the risk of loose connections that can cause electrical faults or pose safety hazards."
- Strip stranded copper wires cleanly, apply high-temperature metal ferrule sleeves, and compress with a ratcheting crimper prior to insertion into the
UandVterminal blocks.
D. In-Sauna Junction Box Regulations
- If a junction box is used inside the sauna room:
- Must be waterproof (IPX4 / NEMA 4X).
- Maximum allowable mounting height: 19 ¹¹/₁₆ in (500 mm / 50 cm) from the finished floor.
3. Clearances & Spatial Layout (Safety Distances)
Table 2: Minimum Clearance Distances to Combustible Surfaces
| Heater Model | Clearance to Combustible Wall (A) | Clearance to Guard Rail / Front (B) | Minimum Ceiling Clearance (MIN Gap) |
|---|---|---|---|
| HIVE Mini 6 | 2 ³/₈ in (60 mm) | 22 ²⁷/₃₂ in (580 mm) | 47 ¹/₄ in (1,200 mm) above stone surface |
| HIVE Mini 9 | 3 ¹⁷/₃₂ in (90 mm) | 25 ³/₁₆ in (640 mm) | 47 ¹/₄ in (1,200 mm) above stone surface |
| HIVE Mini 11 | 4 ¹¹/₃₂ in (110 mm) | 26 ²⁵/₃₂ in (680 mm) | 47 ¹/₄ in (1,200 mm) above stone surface |

4. Floor Mounting & Sauna Kit Timber Construction
The dry weight of the HIVE Mini chassis is 35.2–39.7 lbs (16–18 kg). When loaded with 330 lbs of stones, total operational weight is approximately 370 lbs (168 kg).
A. Pre-Fabricated Solid Timber Sauna Kits (Dundalk Leisurecraft & SaunaLife)
Pre-Manufactured Solid Timber Kit Structural Directives
Kit Owners & Installers Reassurance: If installing into an EpicSauna pre-manufactured solid timber kit:
- 100% Floor-Supported: The HIVE Mini is a free-standing floor heater resting securely on four heavy-duty, threaded adjustable leveling legs. The entire 370 lb loaded weight is borne directly by the solid 1.5"+ cedar or spruce floor timbers.
- Leveling: Adjust the four threaded feet so the weight is evenly distributed and the heater body is completely plumb and level.
- No Wall Structural Alteration: Because the heater does not hang on the wall, no wall framing or stud blocking modifications are required.
B. Bench Submersion / Embedding
- If partially recessing the HIVE Mini into a sauna bench:
- At least 13 ²⁵/₃₂ in (350 mm) of the heater must protrude above the bench top surface.
- Use the official HUUM HIVE Embedding Flange to finish the cut-out perimeter.
5. Control System Architecture & External Power Module
The HIVE Mini requires an external control unit (such as the HUUM UKU Local, WiFi, or GSM System).

6. Sizing Formula & Sauna Kit Verification
- Formula: \text{Room Volume (cu. ft.)} + (3.3 \text{ cu. ft.} \times \text{Sq. Ft. Uninsulated Glass/Tile}).
- Kit Compatibility:
- HIVE Mini 6kW (177–318 cu. ft.): Compact indoor rooms, 4-person outdoor barrel saunas in temperate regions.
- HIVE Mini 9kW (283–460 cu. ft.): Dundalk Leisurecraft 6'×7' / 6'×8' Tranquility and Serenity Barrels, CT Georgian Cabins, and SaunaLife outdoor saunas.
- HIVE Mini 11kW (354–566 cu. ft.): Large outdoor cabin saunas with expansive double-glass doors and windows installed in freezing northern winter climates.
Frequently Asked Questions (Electrician & Rough-In Knowledge Base)
What breaker and wire gauge does the HUUM HIVE Mini 9kW require?
The HUUM HIVE Mini 9kW draws 37.5 Amps at 240V. Per the user manual, it requires a 50 Amp 2-pole breaker and minimum 6 AWG copper wire (rated 90°C).
How many boxes of stones does the HUUM HIVE Mini hold?
The HIVE Mini holds approximately 330 lbs (150 kg) of rounded sauna stones, which is packaged as 10 boxes of 33 lb stones (2"–4" diameter).
Does the HIVE Mini require a neutral wire?
No. The heating elements operate on 240V (or 208V) single-phase 2-wire power plus ground. No neutral is connected to the heater base.
